    Default Jays Computer Hygiene Tips

A Must Read for anyone with any Computer (PC or Mac) who uses the Internet

    Computer Hygiene Tips

    (revised 12/21/2008)

The focus of this document is for PC users running XP or Vista, but I have included a few brief comments on Macs as well. Hopefully this will be a living growing document as time allows. For example I have not addressed firewalls or mobile devices, but they are on a short list of sections I hope to add in the near future.

Thanks for you help and the informative tips.
I hesitate to say bad things about any program, but there are a number of 3rd party links that review the AV programs. The Malwarebytes program I mention in the document can be used along side McAfee. The free version means you have to manually scan your machine on a regular basis, but it's worth the aggravation saved. I'll reiterate what I say in the document, its every bit as important to keep all of the various software programs on your computer updated as it is to keep good security software in place.

Cool Re: Jays Computer Hygiene Tips

    Hi all,
As a PC builder and advanced programmer I use a little program called System Mechanic to maintain my pc. I also use AVG anti-virus free edition on all pcs I build and give choices of available firewalls. I have noticed a huge problem with McAfee and Symantec products blocking Farmtown and myfarm on several machines I have repaired. to fix the problems I had to remove the McAfee and Symantec products and clean the systems with System mechanic to clean out the registry after a reboot. I then put on AVG as a new anti virus 1 its free and 2 in 9 years I have never gotten a virus with it running on one of my pcs.
Symantec products are: Norton anti-vrus and notron internet security, and symantec internet security
McAfee is: McAfee Internet security Suite has antivirus and firewall I dont know what it is about the 2 products blocks the games but I will figure it out and post a solution when i do

Whizzard, I have Norton 360 and have not had any issues with accessing FT or myFarm.

Just for those who have Norton 360 and have read this post and think their troubles for accessing myFarm is to blame on Norton.

Other then that, the Secunia program and Jay's tips are very good.

Nope, all is good! If you have any tips to add they are welcome. If there is something added that is not appropriate we will just either say so or delete it.

    Happy Farming!

Hi, Hackermom! Please see my response to you in the "Game Bugs" section. I guess you can disregard the suggestion to clear your cache, since you have just done that (although it never hurts to clear it again!), but hopefully one of the other steps might help you. Good Luck!
